CloseIris is a typical fifth-grade student. She lives her life by waking up early to walk with her best friend Shay, going to school, and going back home with a quick good-bye from her now distant mother. As the only Asian American in her grade, she comes to realize how alone she feels until she meets Star, a black cat who resides in her backyard.
Star is a solo wanderer who has many whiskered friends back home. While meeting Iris’s mother and Shay, he notices that a lot of people seem to avoid him for no apparent reason. Though Star doesn’t mind the judgment, Iris wants to prove false the superstition that black cats are bad luck. By defending Star, Iris learns to find fulfillment in her own identity.
