This is a skillfully crafted narrative with a compelling and complex character in our young Jeanne. The writer does a good job combining historical detail with Jeanne’s personal journey, using Jeanne's first-person narration in the present and the past to provide us with a dramatic peek at her eventual fate and the events that will lead to it by the end of the third installment in the series. Creating a story that stands alone and also propels us towards a sequel is no easy task. She has done it admirably here.
